Dear Wedding Play

Dear Wedding Play:

I hate to be the one to have to tell you, but you were closed last Sunday.

I’m sorry that’s the way it worked out, but in the end that’s what all plays do.

I will miss you, Wedding Play. You were a good little play.

Yes, I know that August: Osage County is still running, but, sweetheart, that’s a different play, and plays, unlike straight white men in the United States, are not all created equal.

It will close someday, too. Just not last Sunday. Like you. I mean, with reviews like these, are you kidding?

I know lots of people loved you too, and yes, you did do very well at the box office, bless your heart, but I’m sorry, that’s just the way that it goes sometimes.

Maybe if you had a few more snappy one-liners, or a more traditional narrative structure, you could have stuck around a little longer, I don’t know.

But all is not lost, my little angel, because your daddy, Eric Rosen, is moving to Kansas City, and there’s a whole slew of folks over there who have never heard of you or your very successful older brother, Winesburg, Ohio, so never say never.

Oh, don’t worry about me, little play, I’ll be fine.

I mean, it’ll be hard at first because every play I see will only remind me of you, but eventually some other little script will come along, and I won’t be able to help myself.

But that’s okay, little play, because deep down, in my heart of hearts, I know that’s what you would have wanted.

And I thank you for that.
